OUR LADY OF THE NEW ADVENT Yes, it is the icon of Our Lady of the New Advent which graces the archdiocese logo. Only now, as we approach the Jubilee, the Holy Father tells us she will be our "morning star".
The Holy Father's writings consistently blend
several themes:
The New Evangelization is renewed life in the One who makes all things new. The Holy
Spirit is the principal agent of the New Evangelization. The title, "Our Lady of the New Advent", reflects the Holy Father's many encyclical references to the new advent. The title was officially recognized by Rome after Archbishop Stafford designated "Our Lady of the New Advent" as our patroness for the 9 year novena approaching the new millennium. She has been the icon for the archdiocese ever since. In 1991, the Archdiocese of Denver began the nine-year novena. The springtime began in earnest in Denver with World Youth Day in 1993. This has flowered into Our Lady of the New Advent Theological Institute established on March 17, 1999. The St. John Vianney Seminary was inaugurated on on September 8, the Feast of the Birthday of All advents are preparations for the arrival or coming of another. In this case, it is the coming of a time, a time made sacred 2000 years ago by the entrance of the eternal into time, Jesus, the same, yesterday, today and forever. This celebration of Jesus among us will be like no other. It will be "The Great Jubilee." As we prepare for this joyful year, we stand witness to what the Holy Father calls the signs of the times, signs of the action of the Holy Spirit. Indeed, he has said that no one can prepare for the Great Jubilee except in the Holy Spirit. One might be tempted to name these signs as great historical events such as the fall of the Berlin Wall, or the collapse of the Soviet Union. Indeed those are "signs of the times". But they are not the most telling. No, the Spirit works in more momentous ways. For the Holy Father, the most momentous "sign of the times" is the Second Vatican Council. In and through the Second Vatican Council, the Holy Spirit began the time of New Advent in earnest. Now we are filled with the sense of spiritual springtime with the full bloom to be in the year of the Great Jubilee. Hence, it is fitting that the Spouse of the Holy Spirit, the one we call Our Mother, should intercede for us during this time as "Our Lady of the New Advent." In a more personal way, the Holy Father felt the springtime in 1993 during World Youth Day. Is it any wonder that he published "Tertio Millennio Adveniente", his apostolic letter announcing the Great Jubilee, so soon after his departure from Denver and his meeting with "Our Lady of the New Advent". It imbues us with a sense of mission that the Holy Father's writings continually reference the new Advent especially in context of the New Evangelization. We of the Our Lady of the New Advent Theological Institute and the John Paul II Center for the New Evangelization under the protection and patronage of Our Lady of the New Advent extend our "fiat". We are radically available for the Holy Spirit to work in and through us. The Archbishop quotes St. Francis speaking to his brothers after they had finished the rebuilding of the little church of Assisi. "This is good. We have done nothing yet. Let us begin." Indeed, brothers and sisters, let us begin. Our Lord awaits us in the Great Jubilee.
